Food Security Initiatives

Hunger has a sound. It is the quiet rustle of children trying to pay attention in class while their stomachs twist, or the forced laughter of a mother who waters down porridge so everyone "eats." We created our Food Security Initiatives because we have sat in those homes and listened to those sounds.

Through Kawa Kids, we work with local partners to ensure that at-risk children and their caregivers have reliable access to nourishing food. In some communities, this looks like school-based feeding so that children receive at least one dependable, balanced meal each day. In others, it means emergency food baskets for families in crisis, paired with simple nutrition guidance so limited resources stretch further without sacrificing children's health.

We never wanted to stop at handing out food and walking away. That is why our food support often links with garden training, small-scale farming projects, or introductions to our livelihood programs, helping families grow or earn what they need over time. We talk about protein, vegetables, and clean water in clear, everyday language, so even caregivers who never had formal schooling can understand how to protect their children from malnutrition.

I still remember one boy who used to faint in class from hunger. Months after his family joined our program, his teacher told us he had become one of the most attentive students, his grades rising steadily. The only thing that changed at first was food.
